Owner: Limavady Borough Council Location: Camden Street, Limavady Title: ‘Jane Ross Commemoration Sculpture’ 2002 Artist: Philip Flanagan Material: Portland Stone with Water Feature Size: (H) 200cm x (W) 150 cm x (L) 400 cm Funded by: Limavady Borough Council & Arts Council Lottery Background: Artist’s response to mid 19th century event. Jane Ross, on hearing a blind fiddler outside her window in Main Street, Limavady, wrote down the melody known today as the ‘Londonderry Air’. The series of lines within the stone refer to the town’s coat of arms, the lines of the musical stave and the River Roe Artists Details: Philip Flanagan alternates between a figurative and a more abstract minimal approach to his sculptural commissions. This piece belongs to the latter field of practise. He was born in Belfast in 1960. He attended Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts 1982-85. His work has been exhibited in the Barbican and Christies in London, the Concept Gallery, Pittsburgh, U.S.A. He is responsible for a number of public commissions primarily of a commemorative nature. His commissions are throughout Northern Ireland in locations including Carrickfergus, Limavady, Enniskillen and Irvinestown. Much of his early work was in portraiture, leading to the production of a series of bronze heads, which combines representational rigour with investigation of texture, and increasingly colour. His sculpture has become more abstract, and deals with light and form, using combinations of bronze, glass and wood, and paint, as evidenced in Reflections on Water, in Fermanagh County Museum. |
