Starting or growing your very own art collection has never been easier thanks to ‘Own Art’, an interest free loan scheme supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

Own Art makes interest free loans available to anyone over the age of 18 in Northern Ireland, who wants to buy an artwork from those galleries signed up to the scheme.  It works by letting you spread the cost of the artwork over 10 months, making it more affordable to buy that artwork of your dreams.

Own Art customers are able to borrow anything from £100 to £2,500. The loan can also be used as a part-payment on higher value items, helping to promote more ambitious buying.

Speaking about the scheme, Suzanne Lyle, Head of Visual Arts at the Arts Council said; “Own Art is an affordable way to begin or to grow a personal art collection.  The scheme opens up the idea of buying artwork to people who may not have thought about buying art before and aims to make buying art more affordable and accessible for everyone.  We have one member gallery currently offering the scheme in the region and I would encourage more galleries in Northern Ireland to get involved.”

Oliver Gormley, Managing Director, Gormleys Fine Art, commented; "We here at Gormleys are delighted to offer Own Art to our clients, since 2011 when we first introduced the initiative we have seen a steady growth of interest in the scheme from a wide variety of customers. It has helped us and our artists immensely as it takes away the uncertainty of customers paying off purchases over a number of months and improves cash flow.  From first time buyers to seasoned collectors, it has made owning a piece of very accessible and has attracted buyers from across the UK to Gormleys.”

The Own Art scheme is available at registered member galleries in Northern Ireland, Gormleys Fine Art, 471 Lisburn Road, Belfast and 3-4 Dromore Road, Omagh.  Art can also be purchased from hundreds of Own Art member galleries across the UK, many of which specialise in different types of work from prints and photography to ceramics and jewellery, with many offering availability online also.  For more information and eligibility details or to sign up as a gallery member visit www.ownart.org.uk

Since its launch in 2004, over 30,000 people across the UK have used Own Art to purchase in excess of £25 million of contemporary art and craft.  Watch the video below.
