
News and Event in Traditional Arts – March 2012
Flute player Brendan Mulholland, who was awarded a Career Enhancement Scheme grant from the Arts Council in 2011 is launching his album, Jean’s Hill at An Culturlann on Friday 2nd March at 8pm. Music fans will know Brendan as a member of the band ‘Craobh Rua’. Many of Brendan’s musical friends will join us to celebrate this launch and partake in what is sure to be a very memorable event.

Andersonstown Traditional and Contemporary Music School is holding their annual Ceol-a-Thon on 10th March between 12 noon-4pm in the Kennedy Centre. As part of the Féile an Earraigh 2012 Andersonstown pupils will be taking part in ‘Music on the Metro’ where they will be performing on the 16th March. Musicians from the school will also be playing on 17th March in the Black Taxi Depot from 4-6pm and finishing off with performances at the St Patrick's celebration on the 18th March from 7-10pm in St Oliver Plunkett Church.

Armagh Pipers Club has a very busy month ahead!
On 11th March the Club will celebrate its 45th Anniversary with a Book Launch & Annual Concert at 3pm in the Market Place Theatre, Armagh. The book outlining the story of the past 45 years of the Armagh Pipers Club, from its foundation in 1966 up to the present day, will be launched by Fintan Vallely at the annual concert on Sunday March 11th. This concert involves every pupil and teacher in the Club. Contact the Armagh Pipers Club directly for information.
On the 14th March the Armagh Pipers Club welcome the world renowned and very energetic Traditional Band, 4 Men and a Dog play the Marketplace Theatre on Wednesday 14 March at 8.00pm in what is sure to be an excellent night of quality music and song. From 16th to 19th March the Armagh Pipers Club members will be performing a number of sessions at a number of locations in Armagh throughout the St Patrick's Day festivities - Call in for a tune! Contact grainne@armaghpipers.org for further details.
On 24th March at UCH, Limerick, Brian and Eithne Vallely will receive a TG4 Award Gradam Ceoil for their contribution to traditional music! See the news release on the Arts Council website.

Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, Northern Ireland welcomes Pipe Major David Chesney and Drum Sergeant Neil Ussher to give a workshop on “Setting the Foundation for Tonal Balance” (Workshop No 3 for Grade 4 Bands) at Gilnahirk Presbyterian Church Hall on Monday 12th March, 7.45pm. Non-competing band representatives welcome.

The Drake Music Project Northern Ireland will hold a Composition Challenge for 2012, in Ti Chulainn Arts Residential Centre in Mullaghbawn Co Armagh, on Thursday 22 – Sunday 25th March 2012.
This four-day residential experience is open for members of existing ensembles of the Drake Music Project Northern Ireland, and also to musicians new to us from across Northern Ireland by application and experience. The challenge is to compose and prepare a large-scale piece for immediate recording and later public performance.
Places are booking up very fast, and musicians with disabilities from across Northern Ireland who are keen for an artistic challenge and for the opportunity to compose and perform with peers are invited to apply for a place on the challenge by contacting the Drake Music Project Northern Ireland by email on michelle@drakemusicni.com, or by ‘phoning on 028 3026 4294.
