National Lottery Funds Support ‘Northern Ireland's |
08/07/2008
The Arts Council of Northern Ireland has announced the recent allocation of £3.7 million National Lottery project funding grants to 60 organisations across Northern Ireland.
This funding has been allocated to a wide range of groups and arts activities including dance, music, art work, choral, literary and theatre productions along with major events such as the Royal Ulster Academy Annual Exhibition, Glasgowbury music festival and a new community Arts Academy in North Belfast.
One of the highlights from this funding round is the allocation, for the first time, of £19,600 to the Royal Ulster Academy (RUA) Annual Exhibition, taking place in the Drawing Offices of Harland and Wolff.
Roisín McDonough, Chief Executive of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland described the impact of this round of funding: “Lottery funding, through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, to the Royal Ulster Academy, Glasgowbury and for numerous community based organisations and activities, shows that the Arts Council is committed to putting art at the heart of our social, economic and creative life. By supporting a wide range of organisations in their arts activity, we not only celebrate the achievements of our talented artists and improve the local arts infrastructure, but also help to create more opportunities for people to get involved and enjoy the arts.“
Commenting on their grant, RUA President Rita Duffy said, “The Lottery money received from the Arts Council of NI will assist us greatly in delivering a quality, interactive education programme for all ages and all sectors of the community. Given the exciting venue for this year’s exhibition it is important that the Academy educates the public both about the diverse artworks on show as well as the cultural significance of the building in which they are located.”
Commenting on their Lottery award, Paddy Glasgow, Founder of Glasgowbury Music Group said: “Lottery funding from the Arts Council was crucial in the decision to continue with the annual Glasgowbury Music Festival, an event that celebrates and showcases homegrown, original talent alongside major artists and gives the people of NI an opportunity to enjoy a proper festival experience right on their doorstep, for the eighth year running. We are very pleased that as a rural group from Mid Ulster who strive to develop music and the arts in rural areas, where funding and infrastructure for this is extremely limited, that our work done over the years with massive voluntary effort and limited resources has been recognised and valued”.
