Royal Ulster Academy 125 th Annual Exhibition opens at Ormeau Baths Gallery
The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is delighted to announce that the Royal Ulster Academy (RUA) 125 th annual contemporary art exhibition opened to the public at the Ormeau Baths Gallery in Belfast on Saturday October 7 th. Carol Graham, President of the Royal Ulster Academy, pictured with Nóirín McKinney, Arts Development Director at the Arts Council, at the opening of the RUA’s 125 th Annual Exhibition at the Ormeau Baths Gallery on October 6 th.
The famous RUA annual exhibitions are always one of the most popular events in the art calendar, being regarded as major showcase events for the best modern painting, print-making, photography, sculpture and craftwork from across Ireland, north and south.
This is the RUA’s largest exhibition to date, with 300 works on display by our leading artists – familiar names such as Basil Blackshaw, Neil Shawcross, Terry Flanagan, Carol Graham, Colin Davidson and Jack Pakenham – along with works by promising emerging artists who have been specially selected to show their work alongside members of the Academy.
At the opening night on Friday, Nóirín McKinney, Director of Arts Development at the Arts Council, said, “With a record number of artists competing for places in the exhibition, this year’s show is particularly strong. We’re confident also that the Ormeau Baths Gallery, which is Northern Ireland’s foremost contemporary art space, is a fitting change of venue for the annual show, now that its usual home at the Ulster Museum has closed its doors for redevelopment. RUA exhibitions are always a favourite with critics and the public alike, and we see this as a fantastic opportunity to draw many new visitors to this great art gallery. In order to increase further access, the Ormeau Baths Gallery will be open on Sundays from 1pm to 5pm for the duration of the RUA exhibition.”
The RUA’s 125th annual exhibition is supported by a full programme of education events, talks and workshops at the gallery, with particular emphasis on creative activities for children and young people. Guided talks on the exhibition will be given by an Academician at 2pm each Saturday, and a seminar will be held on October 25 th.
The Royal Ulster Academy’s 125 th annual exhibition continues at the Ormeau Baths Gallery in Belfast until November 4 th, Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-5.30pm and Sundays at 1pm-5pm. Admission is free.
