Historic MacNeice House welcomes public on European Heritage Open Day The Arts Council of Northern Ireland will open the doors of its headquarters, MacNeice House, to the public on Saturday 9th September 2006 in a special event to mark European Heritage Open Day.
European Heritage Open Day is a popular annual celebration of Europe’s built heritage, taking place in 48 countries throughout Europe. This event provides the public with the opportunity to visit a diverse range of buildings and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture. MacNeice House, home of the Arts Council, is one of the 220 buildings in Northern Ireland that the public will be able to visit over the second weekend of September. The building itself is of historical interest as it has strong links with the famous Belfast born poet Louis MacNeice. The guided tours will exhibit the building’s imposing architecture along with some of the council’s collection of art. Arts Development Director at the Arts Council, N ó ir í n McKinney said, “ We are thrilled to be opening MacNeice House to the public once again, it is a terrific opportunity for the public to view this historic building and enjoy a selection of our collection of contemporary visual art. We do hope as many people as possible take up this opportunity. We will certainly make them very welcome.” European Heritage Open Days give the public a unique opportunity to visit a fascinating range of private houses, public buildings, monuments, churches and gardens many of which have not been previously accessible to the pubic.
