MINISTERS ATTEND NORTH-SOUTH MEETING OF ARTS COUNCILS
Síle de Valera, T.D., Minister for the Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, and Michael McGimpsey, M.L.A., Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure, Northern Ireland, tonight attended the 24th annual North-South Dinner and Meeting of the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. The dinner took place at the Coach House, Dublin Castle.
Earlier, at the annual meeting of the Arts Council and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the two Councils pledged further co-operation and strategic partnership in their drive to foster and encourage artists and arts organisations arts throughout the island of Ireland.
Welcoming members to the Joint Meeting, Arts Council Chairman Patrick J. Murphy said that the coming year offered many opportunities to strengthen the relationship between the two Arts Councils. "An Chomhairle Ealaíon celebrates the 50th anniversary of its establishment during 2001, and one of the projects to mark the anniversary is the creation of an island-wide arts events listings website, which the Arts Council is undertaking in partnership with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. This will be an important new resource for the arts sector throughout Ireland," said Mr Murphy.
Responding to Patrick J Murphy's remarks, Professor Brian Walker, Chairman of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, noted that the professional relationship between the two Councils had deepened and broadened in his period as Chairman. "With a newly-appointed Council membership attending its first Joint Meeting and a new Chief Executive in place in Belfast, continuity is the key word. The major initiatives in supporting the individual artist, sustaining the arts infrastructure and promoting the arts at home and abroad, are already a testament to achievement and they will present challenges for the year ahead."
The 25th meeting of the two Arts Councils will take place in Belfast in 2001.
