ARTS COUNCIL AND THE PUSHKIN PRIZE

Professor Brian Walker, Chairman of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, issued the following statement:

"For fifteen years, the Pushkin Prizes have greatly enhanced the creative life of school children in all communities in Northern Ireland. It has also extended its work to include schools in the Republic.

The impetus for the setting up of the Prizes, and the main force behind their continued success, is the Duchess of Abercorn, great-great-great-granddaughter of the famous Russian poet whose name has now become associated with Ireland.

The Arts Council is pleased to support the Prizes and deplores any attempt to politicise an initiative which recognises and encourages literary work by school children in three languages - Russian, Irish and English."
