10th Birthday Celebrations
Back in 2003, New Lodge Arts started out as a one-year pilot programme led by the Ashton Centre to provide art projects for young people in the local community. New Lodge Arts have grown significantly within the last 10 years and continue to attract young people from across North Belfast to the diverse range of projects on offer. All our projects are aimed at engaging and empowering young people from disadvantaged areas in North Belfast through their involvement and participation in arts activities.
At the beginning of May, New Lodge Arts will celebrate its 10th Birthday by running two events:
A celebration event in the Crumlin Road Gaol for young people, staff, funders, artists, board members and supporters who have all contributed to the success of New Lodge Arts. The evening will include dinner, entertainment, exhibitions and our Youth Advisory Group Award Ceremony.
New Lodge Arts will host a street party outside the Ashton Centre for children involved in our projects. The event will include arts and crafts sessions, bouncy castles, facepainitng, balloon modelling and much more!

Music Promise takes the biggest stage in the city!
As part of the City of Culture, The Music Promise is putting opportunities to make, play and perform music into the hands of our children and young people across the city this year. In both schools and communities The Music Promise is reaching out to children of all ages and abilities to guarantee a variety of musical experiences across all music genres.
One core commitment of the Music Promise programme is to celebrate and to join hands with our children at Foyle View School and Belmont school. These children and young people who have moderate to severe learning difficulties benefit in every way from the rich vein of music education and enrichment which is at the heart of their learning environments. So we are giving these most precious children the biggest stage in the city this year for the most spectacular and unique musical theatre production ever to come to Derry.
This new musical is based on the story ‘The Lenanshee’ gifted to Foyleview by Sir Richard Stilgoe, after he visited the school in 2012. So moved was he by the powerful driving force of music within the school that he wrote The Lenanshee story as a starting point for a musical. Now, an original script and music score is being written by the internationally acclaimed composer and director Conor Mitchell. No stranger to West end and International stages Conor has written scores for more than forty stage plays working alongside some of musical theatre’s great names. Conor is thrilled to be at the helm of such an exciting and joyful production. Connor’s vision for The Lenanshee is ambitious ‘I want this to be the biggest and the best piece of musical theatre ever staged – and it will be!’
Armed with a team of industry professionals, Conor and the Foyle View team would now like to extend an invitation to young people across the Foyle Learning community to be part of The Lenanshee.
The creative team are delighted to partner with schools, further and higher education institutes and community based performing arts organisations to showcase the talent of our city’s young people alongside the remarkable Foyle View and Belmont youngsters to create the musical theatre experience of a lifetime this Culture year.
Auditions for young actors, dancers, singers aged 12-21 will be held by the creative team from 20th – 22nd May 2013 at Foyle View School. For further information on how you can book your audition and be part of this wonderful creative experience please contact SInéad Crossan by emailing sinib1@hotmail.com. Dance auditions are being held separately on 23rd May 2013 at Foyle View School.

UAYD Professional Pathways in Association with Creative and Cultural Skills Belfast
If you’re a young person aged between 18 and 25 interested in a career in theatre, then these forthcoming workshops are definitely for you. The Ulster Association of Youth Drama (UAYD) has teamed up with Creative & Cultural Skills National Skills Academy to deliver two ‘Creative Choices’ workshops in February 2013.
The Creative Choices workshops are currently being delivered by Creative & Cultural Skills (CCS) throughout Northern Ireland for pupils aged 13-16. They are designed to provide information, advice and guidance on getting into a creative career and are delivered in association with Northern Ireland’s Theatres and Arts Organisations. UAYD has linked up with Creative & Cultural Skills to make these workshops available to older young people who may have left school or be in further education.
We will be delivering two workshops in February – one on Tuesday 12th February 2013 7pm – 9pm at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast – introducing participants to a career in lighting and set design. The workshop will be facilitated by one of Northern Ireland’s leading set and lighting designers Niall Rea, who has designed for NI’s leading companies, Replay, Tinderbox, the Lyric and Ailing Gear, as well as working in Europe and the USA.
A second workshop will be held at Big Telly Theatre Company’s venue ‘The Box’, The Promenade, Portstewart on 26th February 2013 7pm – 9pm and will be introducing participants to a career in costume and creative stage design. The workshop will be led by experienced costume designer Phillip McConnell who has taught and worked in theatre design for over 20 years, throughout the UK and Ireland.

FREE 1-1 Social Media Training
We might not all love it, but the future of media is definitely digital. Twitter Facebook and other social media platforms are powerful tools that enable organisations to network and grow through gaining new knowledge, resources and skills. However, A recent desktop survey by UAYD showed that very few youth theatres are using twitter, and only some are using Facebook. To help UAYD reach groups quickly with vital information and opportunities, we’re delivering a series of the 1-1 social media training days during February and March 2013. If you’re nervous about new media, why not come along, or send one of your group to do some informal personal training with http://oonaghmurphy.com – an experienced social media consultant who will turn it all into great fun as well – really! We’re offering several 1.30 hr sessions on Friday 8th February at the Dungannon Enterprise Centre. If you wish, you can bring along your laptop and/or smartphone and Oonagh will help you get set up. Open to all YT practitioners/participants 18+. Two more sessions are being arranged in March – email if you’re interested as we might be able to bring sessions to your area. BRUISER THEATRE COMPANY
Lady Windermere’s Fan
By Oscar Wilde
A new adaptation by Patrick J. O’Reilly
Directed by Lisa May
Lady Margaret Windermere - a woman of high morals and absolute conviction. In her mind, people are either good or bad, with nothing in between. She discovers, to her horror, that her husband may be having an affair with another woman, of dubious moral standing! This is a classic Oscar Wilde comedy - Parlours and parties, eavesdropping, misunderstandings, secret information, letters falling into unintended hands, and the cheeky wooing of pretty young daughters. Does Lady Margaret learn about life, love and the society she thought she knew so well? You bet she does! Wilde’s razor-sharp wit and satire of high society is as keenly observed and relevant today as any contemporary writer’s work. Bruiser’s new production will be a treat for all!
The show opens with a run at The MAC in Belfast from 7th to 17th November - go to http://themaclive.com/whats-on/lady-windermeres-fan/ to book tickets. There are a number of matinee performances suitable for school groups and post-show talks following five of the shows.
We're then out on tour right through until 8th December; visiting Newtownabbey, Omagh, Enniskillen, Mullingar, Antrim, Manorhamilton, Castlebar, Downpatrick, Newry, Strabane, Limavady, Drogheda, Coleraine and Lisburn. For details of venues and box office numbers go to http://www.bruisertheatrecompany.com/presentshow.htm
Workshops to accompany the production can be arranged directly with Bruiser by phoning 02890 243731 or emailing info@bruisertheatrecompany.com.

BRUISER THEATRE COMPANY
Education & Professional Development for Young People In Partnership with The MAC
June-August 2012
As part of the new long-term strategic partnership between Bruiser Theatre Company and Northern Ireland’s brand new flagship arts venue The MAC, we present a three month long programme of education and professional development opportunities for young people in The MAC’s premiere season.
The three strands of the programme will begin in June with an innovative education project to tie in with Bruiser’s major new co-production of ‘Sweet Charity’, one of the centre-pieces of The MAC’s opening season. This is followed in July by two ten-day Summer Theatre Schools for young people aged 14-21. Finally, August sees The Graduate Academy – a ten-day professional development project aimed at participants intending to pursue theatre as a career.
Full details of each strand can be found below. All sessions will take place in the cutting edge facilities within The MAC in Belfast, but will be open to participants across Northern Ireland.
Strand 1 – June 2012
‘Sweet Charity’ Education Project (Post-Primary Age Groups)
An exciting new workshop programme in residence for schools, colleges and community groups will be launched to accompany the Bruiser/MAC co-production of ‘Sweet Charity’. The workshop programme will provide a range of sessions for groups to participate in, before watching the performance; increasing access, enhancing and deepening the overall experience of Bruiser’s production and visiting the wonderful new MAC.
The workshops are available in a ‘pick n mix’ fashion, and groups can sign up for one or all four (90 minute) sessions. Each workshop will accommodate up to 30 participants per session. The programme provides an excellent grounding in all aspects of this amazing production (choreography, voice, performance development and style) and gives groups a unique opportunity to familiarise themselves with the new MAC spaces in this superb flagship arts venue, developing sustainable relationships with new and existing audiences.
Workshops on offer:
Bruiser’s Choreographer on ‘Sweet Charity’, Jennifer Rooney will provide a Fosse dance workshop for beginners. Fosse developed a jazz style that was immediately recognisable, exuding a stylized, cynical sexuality. With Astaire as an influence, he used props such as bowler hats, canes and chairs. The manipulation and fluid use of props is integral to the Bruiser style, and this style of choreography can be extremely beneficial to GCSE and A-level dance and drama students, encouraging physical awareness and visual precision.
Jennifer trained at Northern School of Contemporary Dance and began her career as a dancer, teacher and choreographer in 2001 after spending a year performing for the Disney Cruise Line company in the US. Notable productions include choreographing the Special Olympics opening ceremony (Dublin 2003) and BBC Children In Need Live (Belfast 2004 and 2007), The Four Quartet’s, Maiden Voyage Dance Company (2009). She is also resident dance tutor and choreographer for the well known Mc Master’s Stage School in Bangor since 2005 and has been a full time Jazz and Contemporary dance teacher at Belfast Metropolitan College since 2006 working alongside Sandy Cuthbert. Jennifer has been choreographing musical theatre for ten years now all over Northern Ireland choreographing shows for the well established Ulster Operatic Company and Enniskillen Light Operatic among others. She has also worked alongside internationally renowned director Vernon Mound on his Northern Ireland productions.
The Estill Voice Model is an approach to voice training that merges science and art. It separates training into three areas of proficiency: Craft, Artistry and Magic and develops vocal expertise as an athletic discipline, integrating the results of current voice research with voice training. The system is useful and practical for all voices, abilities and genres. It is free of aesthetic bias, meaning any non-abusive voice quality is accepted and nurtured, embracing cultural and musical diversity. This workshop is essential for GCSE and A-level students to understand the science behind voice, and increase their confidence and vocal ability.
Ross Anderson has acted as Composer and Musical Director on several Bruiser productions, including ‘Oh, What a Lovely War!’, ‘Candide’ and ‘The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui’.He also works closely with Bruiser’s Artistic Director both as a voice teacher for her professional output and as a director and teacher in developing Bruiser’s Theatre Schools and Graduate Academy. Ross was introduced to Estill Voice Training in late 2005 and has been using it personally and professionally ever since, whether it be in his private studio, with actors or singers.
Bruiser’s Musical Director on ‘Sweet Charity’, Matthew Reeve from Mountview Academy, London, will host a short seminar and a practical session on what to prepare for a musical theatre audition. Matthew will go through everything young actors need to know, from researching a play, researching the company, choosing the right music and audition piece, and obtaining sheet music, etc. He will also run an audition/interview feedback session, giving young actors the chance to prepare a monologue and providing positive tips to develop the piece. This will be especially beneficial to A-level students and those considering drama school in 2012.
Mathew is a voice consultant working with both singing and spoken voice. He also works professionally as a musical director, arranger and composer. Matthew has taught extensively in the Further and Higher Education sector and in many professional drama training academies. He is Senior Voice Tutor at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London. Matthew has worked with Bruiser closely during the development of the Graduate Academy on audition technique and voice.
Bruiser is strongly affiliated with the Brechtian performance style, and physical theatre proves extremely effective in the classroom, for pupils of all ages and abilities. It’s visually exciting, rhythmic, choral and choreographic elements have great appeal, and can be used in all styles of writing and devised pieces. It can help students and teachers to think outside the box, and bring stuffy plays to life with adventurous and dynamic ensemble playing. Focusing on the stylised and highly cartoon/anime nature of ‘Sweet Charity’, Lisa May (Artistic Director of Bruiser Theatre Company and Director of ‘Sweet Charity’) will provide a hands-on workshop, breaking down the myths of Brecht and exploring alternative approaches to text.
Pre/Post Show Discussions & Captioning
Pre and Post-show discussions and Question and Answer Sessions with the cast and crew of ‘Sweet Charity’ will be available for no extra cost to MAC audiences.
Captioned and Audio Described performances will also take place for audience members who are deaf, deafened or have hearing loss.
Strand 2 – July 2012
Level 1 & 2 Summer Theatre Schools (Ages 14-21)
Bruiser is delighted to be teaming up with The MAC, to present this acclaimed training programme for young people in Theatre and the Performing Arts in Northern Ireland.
Bruiser’s Lisa May and Ross Anderson will devise and deliver two intensive ten day Theatre Training Schools in Bruiser unique physical performance style, set at two ability levels, Beginners and Intermediate. This will allow participants to explore all aspects of physical theatre performance and voice work, leading to two Showcase Performances for family, friends and industry observers in The MAC Studio at the end of each School. Participants will experience what it’s like to work professionally in theatre, developing new skills and disciplines along the way.

Millennium Forum Theatre Derry ~ Londonderry
If Walls Could Talk
The aim of this 3 – day Performing Arts project is to provide opportunities for key stage 3 pupils from two local schools to explore the themes of diversity and inclusion in our city. The Millennium Forum Theatre’s Education Officer and Drama Facilitator, Sinéad Crossan, will deliver a series of drama workshops that will engage the participants, enhance their drama skills and inspire them to discuss issues around cultural diversity in our city. The project will result in the pupils staging a short play entitled ‘If Walls Could Talk’. St. Cecilia’s College secured funding for the project through the CRED funding scheme and are working in partnership with Lisneal College from Derry~Londonderry. We are extremely excited about welcoming these pupils to unleash their creativity and devise a play in the Millennium Forum Theatre.
