BELFAST COMMUNITY CIRCUS

Circus Skills

Belfast Community Circus had been running workshops for children and young people throughout Northern Ireland for the last thirteen years. Circus skills are an exciting and different entry point to the arts for many young people who perhaps find self expression a little difficult. They are a proven means of developing hand eye co-ordination, confidence and team building skills.

Two professional circus tutors will provide introductory workshops to stimulate interest and enthusiasm in circus arts. Children will have the opportunity to learn the rudiments of juggling with scarves, spinning plates and manipulating diabolos. Sessions will include warm-up games and skills demonstration in a fun and supportive environment.

Belfast Community Circus provides the specialist equipment needed for these workshops, but gym mats should be provided by the school in order to demonstrate human pyramid building.

MAURICE LEYDEN AND JANE CASSIDY

Traditional Singing Games – Boys and Girls Come Out to Play

In 1993 Maurice Leyden’s book Boys and Girls Come Out to Play, a collection of Irish singing games, was published locally by Appletree Press. Maurice also released a selection of songs from the collection on cassette tape.

Maurice Leyden and Jane Cassidy present Traditional Singing Games, a workshop concert using materials from Maurice’s book. Maurice and Jane work with a class of 30 pupils, teaching them as many singing games as possible in an hour long workshop. After a break, the performers together with the 30 children give a concert for 200-300 of their school friends, often the rest of the school.

Jane and Maurice teach the audience each song and everyone joins in the singing. By the end of their visit, Maurice and Jane have passed on 6-8 traditional singing games to several hundred children.

Contemporary Dance

Through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Tours Programme, Factotum offer a full programme of contemporary dance to Secondary or Grammar Schools. The show would have a duration of around 40 minutes. The number of dancers involved would be 4 or 5 and there will be a series of short dance works, solos, duets and trio, choreographed by Nick Bryson and David McKittrick.

After the performance and short break, there would follow directly a ‘Question and Answer Session’ with the children having the opportunity to put questions to the dancers. The related workshop to follow will cover movement themes and composition methods glimpsed in the performance.
