The Arts Council of Northern Ireland yesterday (Thursday 8th November) welcomed an array of internationally renowned speakers to explore the theme of socially and politically engaged art at its one-day Art at the Heart conference at the Grand Opera House, Belfast.

Legendary Irish novelist Edna O’Brien shared insights into her work in conversation with Northern Ireland author, Glenn Patterson. She was joined by Feargal Sharkey, musician and former Chairman of the Live Music Forum, political playwright David Edgar and Turner Prize Nominee Nathan Coley.

“I am delighted with the calibre of international speakers and the varied audience who attended this year’s conference”, said Rosemary Kelly, Chairman of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. “The arts broaden and enrich our lives; indeed it was evident from today’s presentations the vital role that the arts and artists play in the development of a more open and inclusive society.”
