Plant Dance

Felim Egan (b.1952, Strabane, Co. Tyrone)

Felim Egan studied at the Ulster Polytechnic, Portsmouth Polytechnic and Slade School of Art. His work has a lyrical quality and makes use of linear calligraphy and forms derived from megalithic notations. He is interested in Irish traditional music and finds visual resonances to its rhythms and constructions. He has worked across a wide range of media – drawing, painting, sculpture, neon lighting. Egan began exhibiting in the late 1970s. He participated in the 1980 Biennale in Paris and the Bienal de Sao Paolo in 1985 and in 1993 was awarded the Premier UNESCO Prize for the Arts in Paris and the Gold Award at Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1997. Major exhibitions of his work have been held at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester and at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. He has carried out large-scale commissions for the Ardhowen Theatre, Enniskillen, Belfast City Hospital and Dublin Castle. His work is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, New York and the New York City Public Library, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Deutsche Bank, London and the European Parliament.
