James Allen attended Belfast College of Art from 1961-65 followed by Brighton College of Art from 1965-67. He taught at Goldsmiths’ College of Art and Ravensbourne College of Art between 1965 and 1976 returning to Northern Ireland in 1977 to establish the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s Print Workshop where he is currently manager. James Allen won the Royal Ulster Academy Conor Award in 1987. His work is represented in the collections of the Ulster Museum, Arts Councils of Ireland and Arts Council of Great Britain.
