Dorothy Cross (b.1956, Cork)

Wood and Steel

Dorothy Cross was born in Cork and lives in Dublin. She studied at the Crawford Municipal School of Art in Cork and Leicester Polytechnic, receiving a Masters in Fine Art from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1982. She works in a variety of media including sculpture, photography, video and installation and is well-known for her witty and innovative exploration of contemporary issues. More recently Cross has devoted time to the development of large-scale public events and projects, notably the award-winning ‘Ghost Ship’ in Dublin Bay in 1998. She has had numerous solo shows including ‘Ebb’ at the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin in 1988 and ‘Powerhouse’ at the ICA, Philadelphia in 1991, Angles Gallery, Los Angeles (1997), Kerlin Gallery, Dublin (1999) and Frith Street Gallery, London (2001). She participated in the 1993 Venice Biennial, 1997 Istanbul Biennial and the 1998 Liverpool Biennial. Her work is in the collections of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Goldman Sachs Collection, London and Tate Modern, London.
