Jack Crabtree studied at St Martin’s College of Art, London from 1956-59 and the Royal Academy Schools from 1959-61. Between 1961 and 1974 he taught at a number of art schools in England and Wales. From 1974-5 he won a commission from the National Coal Board to paint in the collieries for a year and became known as the ‘coal mine artist’. He was the first recipient of the International Ruhr Arts Fellowship awarded by the German Federal Government in 1977 and in 1978 spent 3 months working in mining communities in the Ruhr coalfields. Jack Crabtree came to Northern Ireland in 1984 where he was Professor and Head of Fine Art at the University of Ulster from 1984-1986.
