Patrick Collins was educated at St Vincent’s Orphanage, Glasnevin, Dublin and attended classes at the National College of Art. In 1957 he won the National Award for Ireland at the Guggenheim exhibition in New York and, in 1971, the Oireachtas landscape prize. In 1988 he was awarded an honorary DLitt by the University of Dublin. Collins built his practice around the evocation of a poetic Celtic landscape where misty, shifting forms reflect an ever-changing light with objects and figures shrouded in a hazy from which they appear to emerge. His unique approach to the interpretation of landscape has won him many admirers.
