The son of a Belfast stockbroker, Tom Carr was born in Belfast in 1909. As a boy he was taught by the Swiss painter Hans Iten (1874-1930) who had settled in Belfast. He attended the Slade School in London where he studied under Henry Tonks and completed his studies in 1929. He was associated with the Objective Abstractionists group and then with the Euston Road School (William Coldstream, Victor Pasmore, Claude Rogers). In 1938 he returned to Northern Ireland and lived with his family in Newcastle, County Down. He was an official war artist. In 1973 he won the Royal Ulster Academy gold medal and in 1976 the Conor Award. He was awarded the OBE in 1993 for his services to art. He is regarded as one of the most distinguished Irish painters, renowned for his expertise as a watercolourist.
