George Campbell was the son of the primitive painter Gretta Bowen and the younger brother of Arthur Campbell. Largely self-taught, he began painting in 1941 and held an exhibition with his brother Arthur in the Mol Gallery. Belfast in 1944. His first solo show was at Victor Waddington’s Gallery in Dublin in 1946. He travelled frequently to Spain which became one of his favourite locations for painting. He became a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1964 and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland held exhibitions of his work in 1966 and 1972. Campbell was also a writer and broadcaster as well as a designer of stained glass.
