One of the three sons of the primitive painter Gretta Bowen, Arthur Campbell studied lettering and illumination at the Belfast College of Art and later attended life classes there and at Stockport School of Art. Between 1936 and 1945 he wrote and illustrated ten articles for the Ford Motor Company and between 1942 and 1943 produced over 70 landscape drawings for the Belfast Telegraph. In collaboration with his brother George, he published Ulster in Black and White (1943) and Now in Ulster (1944). A proficient photographer, Campbell won prizes for photography and poster design. He had his first one-man-show at the CEMA Gallery in Belfast in 1950.
