Alicia Boyle (b. 1908, Bangkok, d. 1997, Dublin)

Oil on Canvas

H: 100, W: 126 cms

Born of Irish parents, Alicia Boyle was brought up in Northern Ireland and in London. In 1929, with the support of scholarships, she went to the Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting where she studied for five years with draughtsman F Ernest Jackson. She worked between Greece and England and her first solo exhibition was held in the Peter Jones Gallery, London in 1945. She often came to Ireland to paint and in 1971 she moved to a purpose-built studio near Bantry in County Cork. She exhibited widely in Ireland and from 1950-67 she had five solo shows in Belfast, first under the auspices of CEMA and then the Arts Council; a major retrospective show took place at the Arts Council Gallery in 1983. Examples of her work are held in many public and private collections.
