One of Ireland’s most successful artists, Terence Philip Flanagan studied at Belfast College of Art from 1949-53 and became an art teacher. . While at school in Enniskillen, he had attended evening classes at the Technical College and received lessons from Kathleen Bridle who had also taught William Scott. From 1955 he lectured at St Mary’s College of Education, Belfast and was head of the art department there from 1965 until his retirement in 1984. In 1970 he designed an Ulster ’71 postage stamp and in 1976 he won the Royal Ulster Academy Gold Medal. Flanagan has exhibited extensively and his work is included in many public collections including the Ulster Museum and Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin. In 1995 the Ulster Museum hosted a major retrospective exhibition of his work. He is renowned for his landscape paintings, particularly those of the lakelands of Fermanagh and Sligo.
