Gretta Bowen (b.1880, Dublin, d.1981)

Oil on Board

H: 62, W: 75 cms

Gretta Bowen married in her early twenties and moved to Belfast with her husband Matthew Campbell. Two of her sons, George and Arthur became well-known painters. Her own talent lay undiscovered until the 1970s. She agreed to exhibit publicly under her maiden name, not wanting to be known as the mother of George Campbell, who by then was an established painter. She exhibited with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland three times and in 1979 when she was 100 years old was invited to take part in the first International Exhibition of Naïve Art held in London. She died on 8 April, 1981 aged 102.
