Clothhead (1992)

Basil Blackshaw (b.1932, Glengormley, Co. Antrim)

Cloth and Oil on Board

H: 24, W: 20 inches

Regarded as one of Ireland’s finest contemporary artists, Basil Blackshaw was brought up in Boardmills, County Down and attended Methodist College and Belfast College of Art (1948-51). His rural up-bringing no doubt contributed to his interest in horse-racing and dog-breeding which is clearly reflected in his paintings. He is well known also for his portraits and nude studies. He has exhibited extensively over the years both locally and internationally. In 1995 the Arts Council of Northern Ireland organised a major retrospective of his work which was exhibited in Belfast, Dublin, Cork and many galleries in the USA.
