Joe McWilliams studied at the Belfast College of Art and was involved in art education for many years. He taught at the Ulster Polytechnic and then the University of Ulster from 1973-89. In 1986 he opened the Cavehill Gallery with his wife, the artist Catherine McWilliams and in 1988 he was awarded the silver medal at the Royal Ulster Academy exhibition. He is well known for his vibrant and energetic depiction of community and political life in Belfast, particularly loyalist and nationalist parades as shown in his exhibitions ‘A Troubled Journey 1966-89’ held in 1989 and ‘Colour on the March’ in 1997, both held at the Cavehill Gallery. McWilliams has also exhibited in Documenta 6, Kassel, the Whitechapel Gallery, London and the Tom Caldwell Gallery, Belfast. He is a regular lecturer and broadcaster on the visual arts.
