Norah McGuinness was born in Derry moving to Dublin in 1921 to study with Patrick Tuohy and Harry Clarke at the Metropolitan School of Art. In 1929, encouraged by the painter Mainie Jellett, she left for Paris to study with the French Cubist Andre Lhote. Between 1931 and 1937 she lived in London where some of her best work was produced both in painting and book illustration. She returned to Ireland in 1939, was elected President of the newly-formed Irish Exhibition of Living Art in 1944 and with Nano Reid represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale of 1950. In 1973 she was awarded an honorary D.Litt. from Trinity College, Dublin.
