
General Art Awards Scheme
Guidelines
The Arts Council of Northern Ireland offers General Art Awards to artists in Northern Ireland, for specific projects, specialised research, personal artistic development and certain materials/equipment.
How much money is available?
Awards of up to £5,000 in total inclusive of any materials/equipment/professional services are offered in this scheme.
Who can apply?
Individual artists of all disciplines and in all types of working practice who must (a) have been living in Northern Ireland for the twelve months preceding submission of the application and (b) have made a contribution to artistic activities in Northern Ireland. Established artists from Northern Ireland currently living elsewhere may be considered only in exceptional circumstances.
Special priority will be given to artists whose work is challenging and innovative, especially in areas of new technology.
Students applying for a General Arts Award are eligible as long as their non-term time home address is in Northern Ireland and they can demonstrate their contribution to artistic activities in Northern Ireland.
Are collaborative projects eligible?
Collaborative applications from individual artists working together in cross-discipline projects/activities are encouraged. One application form should be used for the complete collaborative project.
Collaborative projects are not eligible for more than the standard £5,000 limit.

Professional Services
Awards for professional services will not exceed £2,000 in total. Professional services include CD making, studio hire, recording/sound engineers, arrangement and production costs for recordings.

What are the criteria for assessment?

Is support material required?
All applicants must submit a current CV.
All applicants should consider submitting one example of recent work as support material for their application e.g. recording, video, publication, reviews, score.
Applications in the Visual Arts must be supported with up to twelve slides. A slide list must be included with the name, date, size and medium of each slide submitted. A portfolio with photographs and other relevant material, e.g. video, catalogues, reviews etc., may also be submitted. Any videos must be labelled, and be a maximum of 5 minutes’ running time.
Applications in Literature must be supported with either published texts or a sample of work in progress of not more than ten pages.
Please include a stamped addressed envelope for the return of support material or make specific arrangements for collection. The Arts Council cannot retain and store support material after the assessment procedure.
How long will it take?
Applicants will be notified of Council decisions within two months following the deadlines for applications.
Are there evaluation requirements for successful applicants?
Successful applicants will be asked to submit a post-project report of not more than 500 words, which will include their own evaluation of the project and details of how they spent the award money. Grant recipients can use either their own format for this post-project report or the template provided with their letter of offer.
Where equipment or material has been purchased, receipts must be submitted with the report.
Failure to submit a report, or receipts where applicable, will affect future applications to all Arts Council programmes.
