The St James Writer’s Residency in Malta will place a writer in poetry or fiction or drama in Valetta in November for two weeks to coincide with the Klandestini Festival which is the culmination of a British Council project in the Mediterranean.

Klandestini reaches its climax with the Festival of Emerging Mediterranean Writers to be held at the St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta, in November 2004 and with the active participation of writers from all participating countries (Cyprus, Malta, Greece and Italy) and local artists. The best works will be collected prior to the festival, and presented in book form and/or online during the festival. It is anticipated that four of the best writers (one from each participating country) will come to Northern Ireland in March 2005 as part of the Between the Lines Festival in Belfast and that the resident writer, as part of his/her residency, would have some part in the selection of these four writers.

In order to allow sufficient time for the recipient to make arrangements for this residency in Malta, the choice of resident will be decided by mid September 2004.

The St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity will be the contact organization in Malta for the resident writer. Accommodation will be provided at the Manoel Theatre Apartments and will be self-catering.

The Residency is up to the value of £740, which includes airfare, internal transport, insurance (£500) and a subsistence/fee for Klandestini Festival attendance (£120 per day). In addition, accommodation and minimum subsistence of £20 per day is being provided by St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity in Malta.
