Time lost from home

In a world where everything has to be fast, postcards are a dying form of communication. As documents they are an important part of history, in particular our family history, which is why it is strange that they do not seem to be treasured artefacts by society - ending up in the bin or in a collection of stuff sent to a second hand shop or a car boot sale.

There is something fascinating when looking at an old postcard, whether sent by or to someone you know or belonging to a complete stranger. When it comes to other people's postcards that have been found, there is a certain voyeuristic feeling when reading the private messages sent to relatives or friends.

This work is intended to elevate the status of what may seem useless objects. Their purpose has changed over time from simple means of communication to historical document and by selecting and displaying them in a formal manner, such as a series of books; one affords them the dignity they deserve.

By presenting these objects, which were once part of everyday life, in a fine art context they take on a different purpose - aesthetic and informative- in keeping with the act of archiving and documentation which is evident in contemporary fine art.
