Artform Definition

The Arts Council supports a full range of theatrical experiences from amateur and community drama, to professional theatre, youth drama and theatre in education.

We encourage artistic excellence and innovative approaches in the creation of theatre; we support drama that reaches audiences throughout the region. We aim to make theatre and drama as accessible to audiences as possible.

The drama and theatre sector comprises venues, venue-based companies, independent production companies, as well as individual theatre practitioners – actors, technicians, directors, designers, producers and playwrights.

The Council encourages partnerships which strengthen and develop the theatre infrastructure and create opportunities for skills development.

Current initiatives

• The Arts Council of Northern Ireland funds the Sector Dramaturgy Project, facilitated by Tinderbox Theatre Company, Belfast.
  
  
• The Council participates in advisory panels to government agencies.
  
  
• We fund a wide range of activities, through both Revenue and Lottery resources which are aimed at:
  
  
• The creation and production of theatre
  
  
• Promoting participation
  
  
• Developing audiences
  
  
• The Arts Council welcomes applications to its Support for the Individual Artist Programme from theatre practitioners who want to develop their individual practice.
